Tracey Benedict: Capture The Good Times, Develop From The Negatives

Tracey is an emerging photographer that graduated with her AA Photography degree and received certificates in photography, portraiture, wedding photography, commercial & studio photography, and fine art photography.

Tracey has been published in Photography Forums Best of Photography 2017, and Best of Photography 2018. She also won 3rd place at the 2018 California State Fair.

We interviewed with Tracey on her background, studying photography, favorite inspirations, and her artistic style.

Where Do you consider your artistic home?

I am originally from New York but have lived in Sacramento California most of my life.

    What brought you into photography?

I started photography when I gave birth to my son and like most Moms, I wanted to document all the milestones. I had purchased a higher-end camera and decided to take some classes to figure out how to use it.

What subject or person have you yet to photograph that you have always wanted to photograph?

I would love to be able to do a photoshoot that ends up on a cover of a major magazine.

What are you trying to translate in your work to those who see your photographs?

I would love to have people see that there is beauty in everyone. I am so happy that many brands are now using plus size models and people who have disabilities.

How would you describe your photography style?

I would describe my style as straight forward. I don’t do much manipulation.

What time of day do you prefer to shoot, night or day?

I prefer to shoot during the day because having more choices of how the lighting is used, you can go in the shadows, golden hour, blue hour, etc..

The Fox Magazine is all about inspiration, what/ who inspires you the most?

I have two answers to this question; First, My son who inspires me every day in everything I do, helps me to keep going and to keep trying. Second, and photography inspiration are my Professors at Consumnes River College, Jim West – his creativity and drive are things I wish I could have just a drop of and Kathryn Mayo, who has such a sweet and kind soul that shows in all of her images.

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

I love my 85mm because I mostly shoot portraits.

What photography or art-related motto, quote or words to live by helps keep you inspired?

“Life is like a camera, focus on what’s important.”
“Capture the good times, develop from the negatives.”
“If it doesn’t work out, take another shot!”
