Meet Brigette Mallos: The Nikon Australia Creator Who’s Landscape Photography Will Leave You In Awe

Brigette Mallos is a landscape photographer based on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

She has a big passion for capturing sunrises; to be able to wake up every morning and create while connecting with nature, it’s something Brigette feels extremely grateful for.

I like to work intuitively; with the light, composition, and tides to evoke a feeling of hope and beauty. I love that no two sunrises are the same and shooting seascape photography changes daily with the tides, the movement of sand, the light as the sun goes up, and the elements around.

Brigette has been using the Nikon mirrorless system for 3.5 years to capture the sunrise, sunset, and the beach lifestyle on the Gold Coast. The Nikon mirrorless system has brought her love of photography to life after transitioning from shooting with a Nikon DSLR. Brigette is now a Creator for Nikon Australia and am proudly supported by the company.

We interviewed Brigette about growing up in Australia, crazy animal stories, journey through photography, favorite inspirations and much more!

Where do you consider your artistic home? Is there a city, country or neighborhood that inspired you to get into photography?

My artistic home is the beaches surrounding where I live. I have always lived on the Coast. Watching the sky, the beautiful early morning colors, and the light is what inspired me to start shooting. I love the solitude of the early mornings and being in the zone with my camera. It has always been my favorite time of day.

How has it been growing up in Australia?

Australia is known for its laid-back lifestyle and vast landscapes that you can spend forever wandering and exploring; it’s a country that allows freedom, democracy, equality, and opportunity. Australia is also home to a wide range of creative arts and industries, world-class film-making, and visual and performing arts and is known for its unique cultural style which is enriched in Indigenous history.

Growing up in Australia gave me the freedom and opportunity to explore different creative mediums from dance, music, art, and photography. I feel very lucky to call Australia home.

Any crazy animal stories to tell us?

The craziest animal story I have to tell is having a huntsman spider crawl out from under my car sun visor while I was driving through the Sydney Harbour Tunnel; also coming across python snakes when walking through the beach headland in my neighborhood!

I also regularly see Kookaburra birds and Koala bears in my local headland, which is pretty amazing!

Getting back on track…what brought you into photography?

I’m 100% nature-inspired. I really wanted to capture the sunrise and incredibly beautiful light as it dances on the water’s edge.

How would you describe your photography style?

I would describe my photography style as landscape and seascape.

When did you first start photographing landscapes?

I first started photographing landscapes seriously 4 years ago.

What does the ocean mean to you?

The ocean is very much home to me. Having always grown up near it, the ocean gives me a sense of clarity, intrigue, and respect for its sheer power; the ocean is also a place where I feel at peace.

The Fox Magazine is all about inspiration, what/who inspires you the most?

I am continually inspired by many photographers and creators who are more experienced than me; that shoot other styles of photography or shoot landscape scenes that are different from what I shoot. If I feel that I need a re-set, I join online workshops run by Nikon School Australia to learn from the stories and journeys of other photographers and creators. There is so much we can all take away from the journey of other photographers/creators/and artists.

How does social media impact the quality of work for a photographer?

I believe that today’s interconnected platforms have created the potential for photographers to expose their work to the world. Photography is changing with the times in the same way that media has changed over time with the internet. You will always be able to recognize a beautifully composed image by photographers who know their art, understand lighting, shutter speed, aperture, and ultimately create with passion and authenticity.

What are you trying to translate in your work to those who see your photographs?

I hope that my photographs convey the feeling of hope and beauty that each new day brings and that by sharing my images, I somehow share a message of positivity.

What are some photography secrets that you can share with our readers?

Shoot as often and in as many styles as possible to find your niche. Trust your instinct and always say yes to work and opportunities, even if you think you’re not ready. If you are ever in doubt remember that your way/journey is the right way/journey for you.

If you had to choose one lens to use forever, which one would it be and why?

My Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S line lens for its optical performance, stunning clarity, high resolution, natural bokeh, and versatility. It is a powerful mid-range zoom that is excellent for landscape, streetscape, and portrait photography and is an essential part of my kit.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

    I am very introverted.

What’s the best part of being a photographer?

The best part of being a photographer is finding the creative medium that suits you the most and also being part of an incredibly supportive community.

What photography or art-related motto, quote, or words to live by helps keep you inspired?
