The French Riviera is renowned for its glamorous beaches, film festivals, and grand casinos.

Its sophisticated atmosphere attracts well-heeled travellers and famous stars seeking a luxurious escape in this picturesque region of France. From the glitzy cities of Nice and Cannes to the fascinating town of Grasse, here are some of the most luxurious destinations to visit on the French Riviera.

Nice

Situated on the far-eastern side of the French Riviera, Nice is one of France’s most beautiful cities with a dramatic coastline home to colourful seaside towns. Many visitors choose Nice as a base for exploring the Riviera, thanks to its proximity to the region’s many beautiful spots. However, it’s worth spending a few days exploring the city, soaking up its rich culture and history. Just a step away from Nice’s idyllic beaches is the picturesque Old Town, a charming place to explore on foot. Also called Vieux Nice, the area is bursting with character, full of colourful buildings with wrought iron balconies and beautiful wooden shutters. Along its cobblestone streets are old churches, charming little squares, and al fresco cafes to stop by for a rest and to enjoy some refreshments. If you’d rather stroll by the coast, head to Promenade des Anglais, a 7-km paved walkway boasting a picturesque view of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a fantastic place for locals and visitors to walk, cycle, or jog. You’ll come across famous landmarks along the way, including the art-deco Palais de la Méditerranée and the iconic Hôtel Negresco, recognised for its lavish facade.

Cannes

For most people, Cannes is synonymous with the famous annual film festival, a gathering of some of the biggest names in the film industry. But beyond the iconic festival, the glitzy city has plenty to delight visitors, especially if you prefer to enjoy a bit of luxury. Aside from its luxurious offerings, you’ll find plenty of amazing villa rentals in the Cote d’Azur and Cannes, perfect for those planning an opulent break. Like Nice, Cannes has a picturesque promenade to enjoy a scenic stroll. La Croisette is a long beachfront walkway, perfect for a relaxing stroll and grabbing a drink at one of the al fresco cafes. The area is also home to Cannes’ finest seafood restaurants, perfect for enjoying a sumptuous lunch while exploring Cannes. Don’t forget to visit Le Suquet, a historic quarter from which the town emerged in the first century BC. Around town, you’ll find painted walls and graffiti, which are part of the town’s heritage, and some depict famous actors and actresses, such as Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin. Cannes is also famous for its numerous sandy beaches. If you want to relax after sightseeing, you can visit one of the beaches, perfect for lounging around and enjoying the sunset views.

St Tropez

A paradise for beachgoers, St Tropez is one of the most luxurious destinations on the French Riviera. It’s a lovely port town with beautiful beaches and year-round sunshine, making it a favourite destination for beach bummers. Like the other glitzy cities on the French Riviera, St Tropez is synonymous with fancy yachts, glamorous parties, lavish hotels, and a vibrant nightlife scene. Spend a day sightseeing around town and checking out its idyllic beaches along Pampelonne Bay. The picturesque stretch of coastline boasts a wide and sandy stretch with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming. Head out to the old port to admire the poshest yachts. Bouillabaisse Beach is a better alternative if you prefer a more relaxing vibe. There are footpaths around the coast, great for those who love scenic coastal walks. Walk the seven-mile trek to Pampellone, passing by plenty of charming beaches en route. For a taste of history, venture into the Citadel. Dating back to the 17th century, it is a fascinating reminder of the town’s colourful history and now has a maritime museum. Spend some time admiring the fascinating exhibits of artefacts and other objects depicting the lives and history of sailors.

Monaco

The French Riviera is home to the tiny nation of Monaco, another destination to consider when heading to the region for a luxury getaway. Despite its small size, it certainly packs a punch. Sitting between Nice and the Italian border, Monaco is renowned for being the playground of the rich and famous. One of the most awaited events in Monaco is the Formula One Grand Prix race. Tourists can get tickets for the Monaco F1 Grand Prix, an excellent adventure during your break. Those looking to splash some cash for shopping can visit the Métropole Shopping Centre across the Casino Gardens. Home to over 80 designer boutique stores, the iconic shopping centre has an opulent interior, symbolising Monaco’s wealth and luxury. If you’d prefer to relax or soak up the sun at the beach, head out to Larvotto Beach, the only Monaco beach open to the public. While it can get crowded during the peak tourist season, the views will make it well worth a visit.

Grasse

Perched on the foothills of Nice and just north of Cannes, Grasse is a picturesque inland village best known for its perfume-making industry. While it’s not as famous as Nice, St Tropez, and other places in the French Riviera, it’s a delightful town to visit, away from the crowded and touristy areas of the region. As one of France’s historical hubs for perfume making, Grasse is home to the headquarters of some famous perfume companies. The town is also home to some fun attractions like the International Perfume Museum and Fragonard Museum, where you can learn more about the town’s perfume-making industry. Visit Gallimard, one of Europe’s oldest perfumeries, established in 1747. The company is said to provide fragrance to the court of Louis XV. You’ll learn more about this when you join a factory tour. When you visit in springtime, you’ll enjoy the fragrant smells of jasmine and fields of roses blooming around town. Both flowers are the main ingredients for perfume. Schedule your visit during the annual Grasse Rose Festival in May, a fascinating way to experience Grasse.
