Where Do You Begin If You Want to Become a Wedding Photographer?

Where Do You Begin If You Want to Become a Wedding Photographer?

When you decide to become a photographer, usually you’re deciding the type of clients you want, right? But sometimes, that’s not always the decision; it’s the type of photography you want to do, too.

So, what if you want to become a wedding photographer? Well, it’s not exactly as simple as saying, “I’m a wedding photographer now.” there’s actually a bit of work that has to go into all of this. So, with that said, here’s what you need to do if you want to get started on becoming a wedding photographer!

    It Starts with Gearing Up

Now, this is pretty obvious, but your camera is your best friend, so treat it well. You don’t need to sell a kidney for the latest model. Instead, you need to invest in a reliable DSLR or mirrorless camera. You’ll also need a couple of lenses – a versatile zoom (like 24-70mm) and a prime lens (50mm or 85mm) are great starters.

And don’t forget extra batteries, memory cards, and an external flash. Now, you have to understand that it’s not only the camera that matters; it’s how you use it. Seriosuly, it’s not as simple as just getting something in focus!

    Learn the Ropes

Alright, piggy backing on what’s said above, this is important. Photography isn’t as easy as getting something in focus, there’s work that goes into this! So, before you book your first gig, make sure you actually know how to use your gear. Sounds obvious, right? But you’d be surprised how many people skip this step.

So, you’re going to have to take the time to learn about lighting, composition, and how to handle different shooting conditions. You’re going to have to learn the best camera settings for shooting wedding photography, and you’re going to have to obtain that “creative eye” too.

So, it’s best to look into online courses, YouTube tutorials, and photography workshops are gold mines of information. Practice, practice, practice – even if it means shooting your cousin’s backyard barbecue like it’s the Royal Wedding.

    Build a Portfolio

No one’s going to hire you if they can’t see your work. Sure, maybe a loved one if you’re lucky, but that’s it. So, just go ahead and start building a portfolio by offering to shoot engagements, family gatherings, or styled shoots. You might have to do a few free gigs at the beginning but think of it as investing in your future. But you need to think where this portfolio will go….

    Create an Online Presence

If you’re not online, you’re invisible. So, it’s going to be a really good idea if you just went ahead and set up a website to display your portfolio, list your services, and share a bit about yourself. Also, clients want to know the person behind the camera. Don’t forget social media – Instagram and Pinterest are particularly great for photographers.

    Develop Your Style

Now, this one is so important and doesn’t seem to be so known. So, every photographer has a unique style, and it’s what will set you apart from the rest. Maybe it’s bright and airy, dark and moody, or classic and timeless, find what speaks to you and hone it. Your style will attract clients who resonate with your vision and trust you to capture their special day perfectly. It really helps to have a signature look.
