How To Know When To Take The Next Step In Your Relationship

How To Know When To Take The Next Step In Your Relationship

Relationships are a lot of things. They’re wonderful, exciting, overwhelming, and comforting all at once.

As you come to know someone and learn more about them, you find yourself transitioning from a single person to part of a couple. This can be scary in and of itself, let alone other aspects of your relationship. But the scariest part is usually knowing when to take the next step in your relationship. You’ve already transitioned from a single person into part of a couple, and now the big question looms over you.

Should you get engaged? How do you know when it’s the right time?

    Give It Time

One of the most important things to consider is how long you’ve been together. True, some people get married after only a few months, while others wait decades before they tie the knot, if they ever do.

However, most people go for a middle ground. You need to have given yourself and your significant other enough time to know how you work as a couple. While a whirlwind relationship and marriage sounds romantic and can work, it can also fail tragically and drastically. You need to know what you’re getting yourself into.

With this in mind, it’s commonly found that couples who have been together for at least three years are less likely to get divorced than those who got engaged within the first year of their relationship. This is by no means a rule, everyone is different, but it’s something to bear in mind. Have you had time to see how your significant other copes with different situations, and have they been able to see how you manage life?

    Comfort and Communication

While there’s nothing wrong with being a little nervous when you first meet someone and start dating, these butterflies don’t have to stay forever. As you become more accustomed to someone, you might lose those butterflies. But don’t worry. Becoming comfortable with someone isn’t a sign that the spark is gone, it’s just a sign that you’ve matured as a couple.

However, there’s a significant difference between being comfortable with someone and being bored with them. You should still enjoy their company, just to a healthy degree. You should both be at the point where you’re a couple, but you’re still individuals who aren’t unhealthily dependent on one another. Being comfortable with someone means being able to talk to them about anything in a frank and honest way. Tell them your concerns, including whether or not you think it’s time to tie the knot. If you can communicate as a couple, you’re already halfway to a lasting relationship.

    When It’s Time

When you’ve decided that it’s time to get engaged, it’s important to make an event out of it. Every couple is different, but your love deserves to be celebrated. An engagement ring by London Gold can make the event even more special, as it represents how you feel.
