Cannes Film Festival transforms the Boulevard de la Croisette into the ultimate intersection of global cinema and high-fashion glamour. Solidifying its long-standing reputation as the absolute pinnacle of international film. While we just finished the 79th year, looking back at the 78th delivered a masterclass in artistic vision and sartorial excellence, climaxing with the world premiere of Spike Lee’s highly anticipated neo-noir crime thriller, Highest 2 Lowest.
The Reign of Flacko and Riri on the Croisette
The star-studded premiere brought out a powerhouse cast, including cinematic legends Denzel Washington and Jeffrey Wright. However, the energy outside the Palais reached a fever pitch the moment hip-hop’s ultimate power couple hit the steps: A$AP Rocky and Rihanna.
The duo completely redefined the festival’s traditional dress code, turning the red carpet into a runway for Cannes-inspired fashion trends. Rihanna turned heads and sent the internet into a frenzy, showcasing a breathtaking, custom sky-blue chiffon gown by Pieter Mulier for Alaïa. Beside her, A$AP Rocky – the man of the hour, exuded absolute confidence. Delivering a sleek contrast to Rihanna’s soft, ethereal look, Rocky wore a sharp, oversized black Saint Laurent suit from the Fall 2025 collection, paired with a custom diagonal-striped tie, his signature gold grills, and a high-jewelry brooch. Earlier in the day for the official photo call, Rocky leaned into old-school Riviera glamour with a relaxed, ivory Miu Miu suit.
Inside the Film: A$AP Rocky on ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
In Highest 2 Lowest—an energetic, New York-centric reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s classic High and Low—Rocky takes on a pivotal role alongside Denzel Washington. Spike Lee notably praised the artist’s performance, highlighting him as a major driving force in the film’s gripping narrative.
Speaking on the red carpet about the experience of working with industry titans and debuting the film on a global stage like Cannes, A$AP Rocky shared his excitement:
“It feels amazing. It’s time that we show the people what we was cooking up. And I’m glad everybody’s happy for us ’cause we definitely happy, you know.”
When asked about shifting from the music studio to acting under the direction of Spike Lee and sharing the screen with Denzel Washington, Rocky reflected on the prestige and artistic gravity of the project:
“To be here in Cannes, representing something as raw and cinematic as Highest 2 Lowest, is an honor. Working with Spike and Denzel forces you to elevate. You can’t just step onto a set like this and pull punches; you have to bring your absolute best energy and let the art speak.”

Beyond the main competition, the creative landscape of the festival was further enriched by panels and roundtables at the American Pavilion, which hosted vital conversations featuring Spike Lee, AfroCannes, and the Diversity & Inclusion Film Festival. These discussions highlighted mentorship and films with social purpose, echoing the exact blend of cultural agency and boundary-pushing creativity displayed on the steps of the Palais.
With Highest 2 Lowest garnering rave reviews and early awards-season buzz, this year’s festival solidifies the project not just as a cinematic triumph, but as the definitive fashion moment of 2026.
