No time to blow-dry your hair after taking a shower? No problem! Alarm clock didn’t go off and you’re running too late to fix your hair? Don’t worry about it!
According to the hair experts at All Things Hair (a publication by Unilever), “bedhead” and “wet hair look” are the top trending hairstyles of 2023.
The All Things Hair experts, who boast a combined 35+ years in reporting and developing hair styling, coloring, and care trends, tracked user searches for hot-button hairstyles across the US. The aim was to measure which hair trends generated the most searches every month over the course of one year to reveal the trendiest hairstyles of 2023.
Bedhead & wet head forever!
The research found that “bedhead” is the top searched-for hairstyle in the US at 12,100 monthly searches, while “wet hair look” comes second, with 4,400 monthly searches.
With 12,100 Americans searching for “bedhead” in the last month alone, there has been a year-on-year search increase of 124% since January 2022, highlighting that the bedhead hairstyle is the must-have look of 2023.
The rising popularity of the ’90s-inspired “wet hair look” trend should come as no surprise as this look has been slowly simmering over the last few years, set to explode in 2023. Whether popped into a ponytail or tucked behind the ears, that slicked-back look is great news for gym bunnies who can ditch dry shampoo for hair gel in 2023.
Securing joint third place are “messy bun hairstyle” and “half up hair” with 2,400 monthly searches, showing that the ‘lazy look’ is certainly trending, and thank goodness! Searches for “messy bun hairstyle” have also increased by 26% year-on-year while, “messy hair” in general, generates 14.8k monthly searches.
The most-searched hairstyles and their monthly search volumes can be seen below:
- Bedhead (12,100)
- Wet hair look (4,400)

The highs and lows of hair accessories
While hair accessories including butterfly clips and scrunchies also remain in demand for 2023, search volume has dropped, with the two highest volume trends losing 44% and 56% of searches respectively over the course of the year.
Low-maintenance look
It seems Americans are all about low-maintenance, texturized styles in 2023, meaning that fiddly clips are starting to lose their shine. However, they should still be included in your 2023 hairdrobe, as TikTok props up their popularity for another year.
