Alternative R&B, Soul Duo GeeJay Present Their ‘City’ Collection

Alternative R&B, Soul Duo GeeJay Present Their ‘City’ Collection

Following the ‘Oh My’ premiere on Red Bull Music UK, GeeJay can now reveal their ‘City’ collection in full.

GeeJay offer a soulful escape from the anxiety bubbling up from under the ‘City’; motivated by the zombie culture of London, Jacob’s breadth of musicality, combined with Gina’s undeniably unique, soulful voice creates a release from city life.
The Story of GeeJay started in a coffee shop in Harringay London where Gina Jane and Jacob Lobo were both working as baristas. They soon started jamming on the cafe’s old piano and as the weeks went by, they quickly started to develop their own vibrant sound. Taking elements from Soul, Funk, and Jazz and blending it with the sounds of urban hip-hop and RnB, GeeJay has crafted their own distinctive style of music.

The strong, soulful and emotionally-charged vocals of Gina fit perfectly on top of Lobo’s vintage jazzy chords and groovy rhythms and the saxophone adds a further element to the melodic mix. GeeJay are now an important part of the new wave of artists emerging out of London.

Following on from first EP single ‘Feeling Blue’, ‘City’ was written during a trip out to Los Angeles whilst the pair sat 8500 ft up overlooking a canyon on the city’s outskirts. The track was inspired after the pair took one wrong turn and ended up in an area known as ‘Skid Row’: they were horrified at the living conditions and instability present in a city that’s made out to be so glamorous.

With their first headline show at Servant Jazz Quarters (Thursday 25th April) being SOLD-OUT, GeeJay are pioneers of innovation within the modern jazz renaissance era – blending hip hop beats and jazzy melodies in order to create sophisticated, yet passionate, pop songs. They released their debut EP ‘Thru Channel’ in 2018. It was mixed and engineered by Mo Hausler (Chaka Khan and One Direction) of Hackney Sound Studio. The EP was supported by Jamz Supernova at BBC Radio 1Xtra and play-listed by COLORS and Spotify. Their soulful take on the classic Garage track ‘Flowers’ was championed by The Observer as ‘Hot Track of the Week’ when it was released in Summer 2018.

Since featuring on the Coffee House Sessions tour, the duo have supported the likes ofPlan BPendulum and Yxng Bane at venues across the UK (including the main stage at Silverstone, Total Refreshment Centre, and Sebright Arms), the Sugar Club in Dublin, the Lodge Room in Los Angeles, and the IQ Business Centre in Kiev in 2019.
