Shungudzo Releases Official Video For ‘Paper’
Radical thinker and artist Shungudzo (aka Shun) currently working on her debut EP and plans to release more music in early 2019, delivers an important message through her latest single “Paper” which draws inspiration from the perception of America aka ‘the promised land.
The “American Dream” is an idea that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. It’s often misconstrued as an ideal were you need to be wealth as a means of happiness.
Yet those seeking money to find happiness often realize that the pursuit of money may mean losing happiness and even losing oneself in the process. Shun powerful observation of this theory leads to visual representation.
“Imagine a future world in which, instead of working your whole life just to stay afloat, you could sell your soul for a big, quick paycheck. Would you do it?” asked Shun
“Are you already doing it, in some way, in the present? This fictional scenario, but very real internal struggle is what I wanted to bring to life in the video for ‘Paper,” said Shun
After a month of brainstorming with award-winning director Carlo Corbellini, the pair decided to create a machine that would appear to extract Shun’s soul from her body without using special effects. They called upon Brett Doar to bring their idea to life.
Throughout the film, projection scenes were used to represent Shun’s soul fight to stay intact, and its ultimate journey back because, at its core, this video is about refusing to sacrifice one’s integrity for money. Shun believes if we could collectively agree to do this, as people and as governments, the world would be a much better place for us and future generations.
