9 Ideas for Wannabe Content Creators

If you’re like most people, then you’re probably already spending a fair amount of your time on social media, where you’ll find the best content that the internet has to offer.

Part of what makes Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms so fascinating is that, in large part, it’s just regular people making content for audiences to consume. And that means that you, too, can be a content creator provided you have a decent enough smartphone.

Building an audience can be challenging, but if you succeed, then you’ll have the opportunity to work with brands and build an income from your social media side hustle.

In this post, we’ll run through some ideas for wannabe content creators that can help you get started.

    Nature Videos

With most of the population living in urban areas, the audience for nature videos is pretty large. People love seeing videos of outdoor areas when they’re not able to get out into the great outdoors themselves. If you’re already spending your time hiking, biking, or otherwise enjoying nature, then why not record your findings as you go? Ideally, you’d have some sort of niche — say, taking videos of wild mushrooms you find on your travels, or outlining the best places to wild swim. In the future, you might get to partner with nature clothing, travel, and equipment brands.

    App Reviews

If you love all things tech, then you’re probably always keeping up to date with the latest app releases. There’s a big market for accounts that download, test, and review new applications, and you won’t need much to provide your review, since most of what you’ll need will already be on your phone, which means you can make this content from the comfort of your own home. You’ll need to capture your screen and know how to record internal audio on Android or iPhone devices, plus invest in a microphone for recording your thoughts and opinions of the app you’re reviewing. In the future, you may be paid to promote applications or be invited to tech conferences.

    Behind the Scenes

Do you work in an interesting industry? Then posting behind-the-scenes footage of your job can be an excellent way to build an audience. With many people simply working in front of a computer, there’s always an interest in videos that provide insights into how other industries work. For instance, if you’re, say, a car detailer, then making a high-quality video that runs through how the process works, plus before/after shots, might be a good idea. And of course, anything luxurious always does well — if you work as a pilot on a private jet, then showing just how the rich and famous get around could work (just make sure it’s allowed, first!).

    Workout Routines

It’ll come as no surprise that anything related to wellness can work well. This is a massive industry, in large part because so many people are interested in being their healthiest best. If you already work as a personal trainer, then providing tips and insights on how people can meet their fitness goals can work well. Try to keep the videos short and to the point, and outline the benefits of each activity in detail. While you might be offered partnerships with wellness brands, the most direct benefit will be an increase in your number of clients.

    Diving Into History

There’s a lot of history out there — only most people don’t know what it is! While videos that are essentially history lessons from school in another form won’t do well, short, engaging videos about obscure pieces of history typically do perform well. As with most content, it’s best to be as specific as possible — for instance, you might make videos relating to history in your local area, uncovering the untold stories of the most iconic buildings, or explaining how streets got their names. Future brand partnerships could come from history-related tours and historic hotels.

    Words of Wisdom

Have you learned over the years? Accounts that outline nuggets of wisdom aren’t just engaging; they can also provide genuine help to people. You’ll need to have something beyond the cliche sayings we all hear time and time again, though. If you’re a therapist, have read a lot, or just have a genuinely fresh take on the world, then look at putting together videos that offer philosophical, practical advice. Brand partnerships could come from wellness apps and products, or an increase in clients if you already work in this field.

    Street Interviews

Social media is a way for people to connect with one another. If you live in an interesting area, then you could consider conducting street interviews, and then posting the results on Instagram or TikTok. You can interview anyone and everyone — we’ve all got an interesting story to share — but you’ll need to work on your interviewing skills to make the content engaging. For example, you might ask people about their favorite restaurants in the local area, how they met their partner or lessons they’ve learned on the journey of life. Future promotions will come from brands related to the theme of your interviews.

    Product Reviews

Product reviews can perform well, especially on YouTube. If you’re an expert (/enthusiastic amateur), then look at recording unboxing/reviews/tutorials for products. Again, you’ll need to be as specific as possible — for instance, reviewing laptops, outdoor equipment, and coffee/tea brands. Your future partnerships will come from working with brands within your chosen niche.

    Passion Insights

If you know a lot about a topic, then simply sharing interesting information about that passion can perform well. For example, let’s say you’re a massive music fan. In that case, making videos that talk about the history of some of the world’s most popular songs, or explaining the musical structure, could be a good idea. The brand opportunities that could come from this include getting tickets to concerts, festivals, and merch. You’ll need to make sure your content is factually accurate, though — there’ll be other fans out there who are just as passionate as you are!
