Toronto-based artist Ekelle just released her new powerful single and music video, ‘Dropped,’ at a significant time in history.
‘Dropped’ was inspired by one of Ekelle’s personal life experience.
In 2015, Ekelle was falsely arrested under suspicion of drug trafficking while on her way home from a vacation.
“There is still a huge stigma associated with any sort of police interaction, especially an arrest,” she says. “People start to look at you funny, like you’ve done something wrong. They completely forgot that you are innocent until proven guilty.”
‘Dropped’ humanizes this issue. With this new track, Ekelle wants people to remember that we’re still human, no matter the outcome.
“We have to go through enough to clear our names and fight for our lives. It’s so much harder to go through this with all the judgement,” she says.
Bobby “B.” Morales wrote a custom beat for ‘Dropped,’ working with Ekelle from the production stage all the way to the master and mix of the song.
“I want you to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” the artist adds. ‘Everything comes to an end. In sharing my story and putting myself out there like this, I encourage you to summon the courage to confront your own problems, no matter what they may be.”
With ‘Dropped,’ Ekelle hopes to help her audience seek out support, so they don’t have to go through the worst all by themselves.
