Texas Adds K9 Cinemas To Mix Of Dog-Friendly Locations

Plano, Texas has always been a dog-friendly destination and now it’s practically pooch-perfect.

That’s because K9 Cinemas have just opened their doggie doors, giving pups and their people a fun new way to spend time together. The theater operates as a “pop-up” in a private event space located near Custer Road and 15th Street.

Image The venue currently shows classic films like “Elf” and “Home Alone” on weekends, but owner Eric Lankford, who recently moved from Indianapolis with his Aussie Eskimo pup Bear, plans to work up to daily showings. The theater features 50 padded seats and easy-to-clean concrete floors, but in January, Lankford will upgrade to sofas for extra canine comfort. (Only 25 human seats are sold per show, in order to leave plenty of room for the pups.) All dogs (limit two per human) must be current on their vaccines and kept on leashes. Owners are responsible for clean-up. Tickets are $5 for dogs, $9 for kids, and $12.50 for adults. Candy, drinks and doggie treats are available for $2.

“Wallet Hub ranked Plano 12th among the most pet-friendly cities in the U.S. and 2nd in Texas (behind Austin) this past year,” said Visit Plano Director Mark Thompson. “And now we’re the place of choice for dinner and a movie – with your dog.”

Following is a partial list of pup-friendly Plano restaurants and hotels. (Note: it is always advised to let them know you’re bringing your furry friend when you reserve.)

Each play area has shade structures with bench seating and drinking fountains; doggie rinse stations are also provided (but are turned off during winter months). LED lighting has been added for better visibility at night.

The dog park is open sunrise to 9:30 p.m. every day, except Thursdays, when the park is open from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. It’s closed during and after inclement weather to protect the turf, and sometimes for a few days after until the ground dries.
