Recharge Your Batteries While On Vacation
Let’s face it, by the time your annual vacation comes around, you’re running on empty.
You’ve barely got enough energy left to make holiday arrangements, let alone do the packing, and it’s enough to make you wilt. And, with the inflation rate being what it is, who knows if you can even afford to go on holiday this year?
Either way, you’ll need to recharge your batteries if you want to put your best foot forward in 2023. However, a vacation where you’re glued to your phone to sort out issues happening miles away is no vacation. Many don’t realize that you often have to unplug before you can recharge consciously. Otherwise, you may return from vacation feeling like you never had one.
In this article, we’ll discuss what steps should be in place before you go on vacation, and how to implement those steps once you’re away. Hopefully, the suggestions put forward will help you to have the best vacation of your life, and return to work refreshed and raring to go.
How to plan for your “unplugging”
Unplugging doesn’t mean neglecting your responsibilities. It simply means you won’t be able to fulfill them during your vacation. It also means your check-in time is limited. Here’s how to unplug:
- Make the decision – the important thing is to decide how “unplugged” you want to be, and stick to that decision. Are you going off-grid completely, or will you check in once a week, or once a day?
- Share the decision – let your colleagues know when you are going on leave and whether or not they’ll be able to contact you. If you are checking in, set a time to do it each day. Don’t forget to consider different time zones.
- Be consistent – if you’ve said you’re going off the grid, then go off the grid completely. Otherwise, you are giving the message that you don’t stick to what you say and risk people not respecting your personal time in the future.
- Plan for your return – work out a system so that whoever takes over your duties knows what to hand over to you on your return. Also, clarify what you expect done while you are away.
- Plan your budget – decide on a budget, and stick to it. Always give yourself room for unexpected expenses, so you don’t have to worry if you overspend on one or two planned excursions because it’s bound to happen.
The few steps outlined above will help you to feel confident that the company will continue to flourish without you for the few weeks you’re on vacation.
How to implement your “unplug”
Now that you’ve got everything in place, and all the right people have been informed, you must put your plan into practice.
Here’s how you can do that:
- Switch off your phone – have a separate phone for personal and work matters. Switch off your work phone except for check-in times.
- Organize your emails – set up an automatic “out of office” reply, and create a holiday email address for unavoidable issues. Share this address with colleagues you want to stay in touch with over the holiday period.
- Notifications – turn off work-related notifications and try to take only personal devices along.
There’s no point in going on a lovely holiday if you spend it worrying about all sorts of things. If you follow the steps above, you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that you have everything under control for your idyllic vacation.
