Summer Travel Woes: How Travel Insurance Can Help

Thousands of flight cancellations and delays are frustrating fliers this week, and experts say these travel woes are likely to continue throughout the summer.

So, how can travelers make things a little easier when there are issues at the airport? Travel insurance.

InsureMyTrip’s travel insurance expert, Meghan Walch, is breaking down what happens when a flight is canceled or delayed, and a passenger has travel insurance vs. when a passenger did not purchase a policy.

Scenario 1: A flight is delayed, and a passenger is stuck at the airport for hours

Passenger with travel insurance – The travel delay benefit may provide reimbursement for reasonable meals during the time of the delay. (Travelers must be delayed for a certain number of hours before this benefit can be applied).

Passenger without travel insurance – Each airline has its own flight delay policy for passengers waiting at the airport; there are no federal requirements.

Scenario 2: A flight is canceled, and a traveler must stay longer at their vacation destination

Passenger with travel insurance – Travel delay coverage may provide reimbursement for reasonable hotel accommodations if a trip is extended due to unforeseen circumstances – like a flight cancellation.  Trip interruption coverage may provide reimbursement for prepaid, non-refundable expenses like additional airfare for an emergency flight home.

Passenger without travel insurance – Flight cancellation policies vary by airline and circumstance. If a flight is canceled, airlines are not required to reimburse travelers for things like a prepaid, non-refundable hotel room.

Scenario 3: A traveler misses a cruise or tour departure because of a flight cancellation or delay

Passenger with travel insurance – The missed connection benefit may provide coverage if a delayed flight (for example, of 3 hours or more) causes a traveler to miss a cruise or tour departure.  Trip interruption coverage provides reimbursement for prepaid, non-refundable expenses for additional airfare to rejoin the trip.

Passenger without travel insurance – Flight cancellation/delay policies vary by airline and circumstance.  Again, if a flight is canceled, airlines are not required to reimburse travelers for losses such as a cruise, tour/safari, concert, or entertainment ticket.
