7Descent’s Cover of The Five Stairsteps’ Ooh Child Stems From Loss
7Descent’s cover of “Ooh Child” pulls away from Chicago Soul and gives us a rock-focused twist on this hit.
7Descent’s cover of The Five Stairsteps “Ooh Child” was inspired by the tragic passing of guitarist and founding member Ed Taylor’s parents to Covid 19 less than 24 hrs apart in March of 2021.
While keeping the use of the present trumpet opening, 7Descent amplifies their rock sound by making the drumline heavier and using a hefty electric guitar as the rhythmic pulse. The vocals shift from silky smooth to a more honest grit but adds the use of falsetto harmonies to pay tribute to the song’s soul roots. Overall, 7Descent’s power ballad rendition allows us to hear such familiar lyrics in a whole different way.
November of 2019 in Nashville, TN was the birth of the Rock ‘n’ Roll group 7Descent. There were 2 members including guitarist Ed Taylor and Ishmael Herring (a.k.a. Milo) as lead vocalist that got the idea to bring the band together. Fast forward to 2020 when 2 more members, Andrew Cremmins (drums) and Brian Coffey (bass joined the band, completing 7Descent. All of the band members were brought together by the great power of Craigslist.
Some of their songs prove to be more hard rock than others, showing listeners the diversity that they have and take into consideration with every song that is written. For example, “Mad Emperor” is more of a poem that is spoken within the melody while “Beverly” is a song written about a girl and a guy with a little more of a pop feel.
The band’s overall inspirations range anywhere from classic/indie rock, all the way to Hip-Hop. Bands such as the Ramones, Judas Priest, and Greenday are all said to have played roles in the influence of 7Descent. It is confirmed that each member of the band has something special about them that they have brought to the band in order to make the full 7Descent experience what it is today. With the goal set to inspire others with the sound of a punk band, they certainly show their uniqueness with every song!
