If you live around people doing yoga, or you are a yoga person, then you might be familiar with Nauli Kyria.
Nauli is a yoga practice with a history spanning thousands of years. It is a simple exercise that involves people contracting and relaxing their abdomen.
There are four major steps in Nauli Kryia, with each targeted at a part of the abdomen:
- The Uddiyana Bandha targets the upward abdominal lock. It uses the lungs by emptying it to push the abdomen up.
- The Madhyana Nauli targets the central abdominal muscles. It uses the uddiyana bandha to push the abdominal muscles out. This will lead to the contraction of the central abdominal muscles.
- The Vama Nauli targets the left abdominal muscles.
- The Daksina Nauli targets the right abdominal muscles.
There is also the rotation of the abdominal muscles in alternating clockwise and anticlockwise directions.
Why then should you practice Nauli Kryia? What are the benefits surrounding the practice? You are familiar with the different Nauli exercises people post on social media. You feel that the exercises are a little odd, but do you know that it comes with an array of benefits?
It is so beneficial that the Hatha Yoga Pradipika claims that Nauli creates happiness like the goddess of all creation.
Are you intrigued? If yes, below are a few things you can gain by engaging in Nauli Kryia.
Strengthens the Abdominal Muscles
The major benefit of Nauli is its effects on the abdominal muscles. It isolates the rectus abdominis, i.e., the six-pack making it attractive to many people. Nauli is effective in strengthening the abdominal muscles due to its contraction and rotation mechanism. Therefore, there is a buildup of strength in the abdominal walls’ surrounding muscles.
As a side benefit, Nauli also targets the body core. This makes it ideal for building up the body’s core strength.
It Helps in Exercising the Internal Organs
Nauli has two effects on the internal abdominal organs. One is that it helps to massage the organs. This will lead to their stimulation and results in a healthier organ. The other is in the improvement of the blood flow to these internal organs. Therefore, they function more effectively.
With Nauli, you can improve your internal organs’ health status, which translates immediately to the body’s health.
It Reduces the Chances of Heartburn
Heartburn occurs when acid present in the stomach goes up the esophagus. This is a very painful sensation because it leads to the irritation of the esophagus. Normally, the body has a plan for this situation, which is in the LES sphincter’s presence. This sphincter is responsible for preventing acid reflux, and when it fails, heartburn occurs.
Some studies indicate that Nauli helps in reducing the chances of having heartburn by targeting the LES. It tones the LES, thereby making it more responsive and effective towards stopping the acid surge. By doing this, it reduces the chances of heartburn.
Note: People suffering from heartburn should not perform Nauli. This is because it can lead to the aggravation of the condition.
It Turns the Chakra Upward
In spiritual terms, an inactivated chakra is a lotus flower facing down. Nauli helps to activate the chakra, thereby turning the lotus up. With the lotus up, you can awaken the Kundalini energy, which leads to better meditation.
It Can Reduce Menstrual Cramps
Although there is no scientific backup for this, many yoga enthusiasts claim that Nauli helps with menstrual cramps. Practicing Nauli can help ease the pain associated with menstruation.
Note: People currently undergoing menstruation must NOT do Nauli. For example, an upward suction of the abdominal organ can alter blood flow.
With regular practice of Nauli, you can be less likely to suffer from constipation and indigestion. However, be careful of engaging in the practice if you experience tummy ache.
It Improves Fertility
For many years, fertility massage is one popular practice to aid fertility in women. This is because it improves the flow of blood into the reproductive organs. Nauli has the same effect making it ideal for people yet to be pregnant.
Note: Pregnant women or women trying to conceive should STEER CLEAR of Nauli because it has the opposite effects on the body.
